Always test decks, fences, and areas that are peeling before painting. You can also test interior walls that obviously have water damage. Ensure the ratio is less than 12%.

How to Match Ceiling Paint | eHow.com
Very good article. One item not mentioned is asking the builder what type of paint was used and what the original color was.

Patching without flashing -- yes way! | Jack Pauhl
Trying to get sheens to match after repair work is always difficult. I just finished one job where I had to go over the patched holes four times before I could get the Sherwin Williams Home Duration "Satin" to cover without the holes showing as you view from the side. I am going to try Jack's solution and report back to you.

There are some good preparation tips in the various videos. I tape most everything and also my rolling technique is different, but I watch and listen to a lot of different professionals and take out of it what I think will help me become a better painter.

PiViT Ladder Tool - perfect for roofs and stairwells
This is a tool I can't live without for both interior and exterior painting projects. It costs about $90, but as a do-it-yourselfer and a professional, you will find many uses for it. (No, I do not work for them. It has replaced the Little Giant for me and I feel very safe working on roofs and stairwells.

Drywall Sanding Tips and Techniques | The Family Handyman
This is an excellent article on wall preparation before painting. The key to a professional looking painting project is to prepare the walls properly. I particularly like the idea of using a hand held lamp to miss any flaws on the walls that are not obvious because of the lighting in the room.
